There, on the rich but unforgiving prairie, he found the problem that would change his life: cast-iron plows that clogged in the sticky black soil. From a discarded, broken steel saw blade — scrap the world had thrown away — he forged a self-scouring plow that cut clean.

Demand exploded. He moved to Moline, built systems, and became almost fanatical about quality — a man who'd watched his own name turn to a liability, determined to build one worth trusting. His family eventually joined him; the distance closed. But the question lingers. Told straight, with full moral weight: greatness isn't always clean, and sometimes the path forward begins with a single, irreversible step away from everything behind you.
